The Baltic Sea Aquaria

The journey through the underwater world of the Baltic Sea starts with a downward glance into the docks of Stralsund.  Walking down the stairs, typical denizens of salt and freshwater like perches and eels come across the visitors' eye.

Different pipefish and lumpsucker are hidden in the seagras meadow. Only a close look on the tank reveals their existence.

In the chalk coast it will be easier to discover fish. Giant codfish and garfish swim through the clear water. The ground is populated by plaices.

In the skerry sea bustles a shoal of sea trouts whereas in the river mouth tank giant sturgeons circle. Among them is a Russian sturgeon. It lives now for more than 40 years at the German Oceanographic Museums. Therefore he really is our "employee" with the most years of service to the museum.

In smaller basins visitors can observe corals (you can find some in the Baltic Sea as well), sea anemones, small crabs, shells and slugs.

The round tour through the Baltic Sea ends in the Kattegat. Here the visitor will meet colorful wrasses and can be impressed by the giant lobster.

There is certainly more fish to discover in our displays. Make the journey and get to know the small and giant treasures of the underwater world in front of Stralsunds´front door.
