1:1 Giants of the Seas
At the end of the round tour through the OZEANEUM a final highlight is presented to the visitors. In this exhibition hall the "Giants of the Sea" are on display. The hall with a height of approximately 20 meters and 30 meters length accommodates whales and other giants of the seas in their original size.
In a complex procedure sculptors build the true-to-life replicas, coloured them and hung them in an authentic position underneath the halls' roof.
The exhibits' basic message is to communicate the mightiness of the giants, their elegance and their perfect adaption to life in the water. Here it becomes obvious that the medium water has shaped these giants, which development they had run through, but also how endangered they are.
Three galleries open different perspectives to the life-size models. Detailed information about the giants of the seas, their distribution, endangerment and other characteristics are provided on wall and floor displays. Not only mammals but also other giants of the seas are presented in this exhibit: enormous algae forming extended kelp forests, large fish, giant squid, gigantic crabs and shells.
The hall displays the following animals:
- a blue whale of 26 meters length
- a 16 meters large humpback whale with a five meters large pup
- an orca of ten meters
- a sperm whale, 15 meters long, diving while in a fight with a giant squid
A complex multimedia installation presents the individual species of whales with their communication sounds and "singing" as well as the threats they have to cope with. The presentation plays every half and full hour.
This exhibition is realized in cooperation with Greenpeace.
